Ice analog halos.

چکیده
Crystals of sodium fluorosilicate are used to produce easy to set up visual displays of atmospheric halos, including the 22 degrees halo, the Parry arc, and upper tangent arcs. Scattering phase functions for single ice-analog rosettes, including a rough one, and a column aggregate, measured in randomized orientation, are also given. The phase functions show prominent halo features, with the exception of the rough crystal.

Photometric Measurements of the Radial Halo Profile
Despite the growing scientific awareness of ice-crystal halos, there is surprising lack of quantitative observational data about them. Even the most basic (and often-referenced) angular measurements sometimes consist of casual determinations of the radii of circular-halos with no mention whatever of the intensity distribution. More-complex halos are reported with either freehand drawings or pho...

متن کاملA general setting for halo theory.
We describe a general framework for systematically treating halos that are due to refraction in preferentially oriented ice wedges, and we construct an atlas of such halos. Initially we are constrained neither by the interfacial angles nor the orientations of real ice crystals. Instead we consider "all possible" refraction halos. We therefore make no assumption regarding the wedge angle, and on...
متن کاملObserving cirrus halos to constrain in-situ measurements of ice crystal size
In this study, characteristic optical sizes of ice crystals in synoptic cirrus are determined using airborne measurements of ice crystal size distributions, optical extinction and water content. The measurements are compared with coincident visual observations of ice cloud optical phenomena, in particular the 22◦ and 46◦ halos. In general, the 5 scattering profiles derived from the in-situ clou...
متن کاملPyramidal ice crystal scattering phase functions and concentric halos
Phase functions have been calculated using the Monte Carlo/geometric ray tracing method for single hexagonal pyramidal ice crystals (such as solid and hollow bullets) randomly oriented in space and horizontal plane, in order to study the concentric halo formations. Results from three dimensional model calculations show that 9° halo can be as bright as the common 22° halo for pyramidal angle of ...
